Who Is the Antichrist?
By Marks Watson
(Updated 9/18/2003)
This is an important question many teachers and scholars have attempted to answer for a long time. This paper will not attempt to give a name to the individual in question who is, all probability, alive today. Who he is, is of less importance to genuine Christians than as to what he does and to a lesser degree, where he comes from. Here we will look into these issues.
This paper is not an exercise in political correctness, however it is not written to create dissension in the body of Christ. This is being written because most people that claim Christ as their savior will not be able to recognize him when he comes. This is why Jesus Christ emphasized watching with such a repetitious determination. This one of Christ’s most oft repeated warnings to the believers that live at the end of the age. What are we to watch for? The signs of Christ’s coming, and we can only know what to watch for by studying (not just reading) God's word. The study of the end times is probably one of the most important undertakings any Christian can do right now. The study of salvation, grace and love are foundational principles and they are most important. However, Paul called these doctrines milk, clearly meaning that they were for spiritual children, no... spiritual infants for only infants drink milk as their primary diet. An infant does not know his right hand from his left. He does not know who to trust and will be carried away by any stranger to God knows where. This describes the Church today. People who are spiritually infants (perhaps not even regenerated) who have no idea what the all the concern about Bible prophecy is all about. Sometimes, they even have the temerity to condemn those who study it and warn from it, as Christ so often did. Therefore this paper is both a study and a warning, lest we be like the Pharisees of Christ’s time that did not want to see the hour of their visitation, and were condemned to hell for it.
