Zola recounted his January 1990 visit to Moscow where he attended a Global Forum
convention -- as clear a gathering of New Age "environmentalist wackos"
as has ever been assembled (more than 1,000 participants from 83 countries
attended). It was co-hosted by the first freely elected Soviet parliament,
all Soviet religious bodies, the Soviet Academy of Sciences, and the
International Foundation for the Survival and Development of Humanity.
Yet Zola enthusiastically praised the environmental goals of the Forum
and spoke glowingly of the various conference attendees -- atheist,
New Age globalist Mikhail Gorbachev (who came with his KGB-appointed
Soviet church officials in tow);
globalist U.N. Secretary General Perez de Cuellar; atheist, evolutionist,
New Ager Carl [the pagan] Sagan; and earth worshiper, radical environmentalist,
New Ager, Vice President of the U.S. (then senator), Al Gore.
In his plenary address, Gore, a Southern Baptist whose writings reflect his
belief in the mother goddess, Gaia, declared that ecological problems could only
be solved through a "new spirituality" common to all religions.
(Gore's "new" ecumenical spirituality is, in reality, revived paganism.)

The "Moscow Declaration"
signed by participants called for "a global council of spiritual leaders"
and the "creation of an inter-faith prayer ... a new communion with Nature ..."
This growing pagan spirituality with its worship of creation instead of the
Creator (Rom 1:21-23) is ideal for joining so-called science and all
non-Christian religions.

Paul Gorman, director of the NRPE, was director of the Temple of Understanding,
housed at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. He organized
a "Joint Appeal," consisting of 22 scientists and 100 religious leaders that
became the NRPE.
Senators Al Gore, Timothy Wirth, and James Jeffords were instrumental in the
creation of the NRPE.
The NRPE avoids telling the participating churches the true nature of their agenda.
Instead, they are exploiting the churches, converting them into lobbying machines
for their extremist policies.

Jewish-Catholic unity might be pope's legacy

Prominent Jewish and Catholic leaders meeting in New York yesterday said the spirit of respect and cooperation between the two religions forged by Pope John Paul II is now so strong that it would continue beyond his papacy.

"I am optimistic that what this pope has done for the last 26 years cannot be reversed," said Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Vatican council responsible for Jewish-Catholic relations. He added that "everyone can only be happy about the progress that has been made, which is so important for peace in the world."

The World Jewish Congress is hosting the two-day forum for 27 Catholic cardinals and bishops to meet with international Jewish leaders from around the world. While this is the third gathering, it is the first time that the Catholic leaders were meeting with Orthodox Jewish leaders, showing the progress of the interfaith cooperation, said Rabbi Israel Singer, chairman of the World Jewish Congress.

"Some of what we are doing today is allaying concerns about the future. This is an opportunity to make sure we don't have any backsliding," said Singer, of Lawrence. He said the gathering would pray for the ailing pope, who Singer said had done more for Catholic-Jewish relations "in 20 years than anyone had in 2000 years."

The participants discussed the humanitarian work Catholics and Jews had worked on together in Kosovo, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Argentina. The presence of the Catholic church in most corners of the world also provides an effective distribution network for Jewish charities as well as a bridge to Muslim communities.

Besides planning for the future, the gathering at the Jewish Heritage Museum in Battery Park was to ensure that the past not be forgotten.

Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger of France, noting the presence of Catholic prelates from Asia and Africa, said younger church leaders need to be aware of the "tragic history, sometimes bloody," between the two faiths.

"This meeting is important because there are very few experts on the dialogue with Jews," said Lustiger, 78, who was born to Jewish parents but was raised by a Catholic family after his mother died in the concentration camp at Auschwitz. Later, Cardinal Peter Kodwo Turkson of Ghana told the group that in his country there was no formal relationship with Jews. "I am not aware of any synagogue; if someone here knows of one, please let me know."

Pope urged to convert Jews and others

ROME - A leader of an ultra-traditionalist Catholic group that broke with the Vatican
said yesterday that Pope Benedict should tell Jews and members of other religions to convert because they are part of "false systems."

Father Franz Schmidberger, a top official of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), also called on the Pope to invalidate excommunications imposed when its founder, the late French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, ordained bishops without permission.

The SSPX rejects the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. It sticks to the old Latin mass and opposes recognizing the validity of other religions, particularly non-Christians.

"Other religions, as such, are false systems," said Schmidberger, who is the right-hand man of the traditionalists' current head, Bishop Bernard Fellay.

"Instead of leading their members to our Lord Jesus Christ, to Baptism and the confession of faith in his divinity, they refrain from this and so we consider these other religions as very dangerous," he told a news conference presenting a biography of Lefebvre.

"St. Peter, the first pope, preached to the Jews and told them that `if you want to be saved you must do three things: you must regret your sins and convert, believe in our lord Jesus Christ and, thirdly, be baptized,'" he said.

"We expect that every pope who claims to be the successor of St. Peter should take the same stand in meetings with leaders of other religions and tell them the same three things," Schmidberger said.

Fellay and Schmidberger held talks with Benedict last August. But while Benedict shares the SSPX's concern for some parts of Catholic tradition and has encouraged wider use of Latin in the Church, he has vowed to continue the dialogue with other religions begun by his predecessor John Paul.

Benedict has met Jews, Protestants and Muslims. In August he visited a synagogue in his native Germany.

Palestinian leader plans Vatican visit

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas plans to visit the Vatican soon to meet with Pope Benedict, diplomatic sources said yesterday. The sources said Abbas would likely visit the Vatican and Italy in the first few days of December.

The centerpiece of his visit would be a meeting with Pope Benedict, who was elected last April. The late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat visited the Vatican several times for meetings with Benedict's predecessor, John Paul, who made a historic trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories in 2000. The Vatican supports Israel's right to exist alongside a Palestinian homeland.
